The collaborative effort around CLEO was also responsible for the first delay-tolerant-networking tests in space, again using the UK-DMC satellite. This was possible (and even easy to engineer) due to the Internet-friendly engineering design of the UK-DMC, which had also made flying CLEO possible.

IRIS (Internet Routing in Space) is a Cisco router now flying as a payload on Intelsat-14.

I'm glad this task is developing in its own right. In any design or engineering field the early concept phase is what I find most interesting, and I still do it, but now on the other side of the world in Canada.
Best of luck,
Thanks for this nice post on the advancements made by the Nigerian and UK space programmes. It shows that with continued effort, the right technologies can be placed in the hands of those who need them. It is also a plus that the facilities at RAL (a very lovely site) continue to support the UK's contribution and heritage in space science and technology.

Don't get me wrong, i'm all for space exploration, or more to the point, earth observation, however the latest satellites launched have joined the plethora of existing technology that is currently orbiting the earth. Apparently over 19,000 objects have been sent into space by humans and are constantly in the Earth's orbit. Only 800 of these objects are actually functioning and therefore serving a purpose, meaning the rest is quite literally rubbish. Surely this cant be good, we have enough litter on the earth as it is, we dont need to clutter our universe aswell!
