Space security guru Stuart to advise government
SSTL’s military space expert Dr. Stuart Eves has accepted a year’s secondment to the new Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) at the UK’s new Harwell facility to advise on space security. His principal responsibility will be as the authority on the Security and Resilience Unit (SRU) that will form part of the International Space Innovation Centre (ISIC).

Stuart will also be expected to actively liaise with the newly formed UK Space Agency on space security matters in support of government policy making, since a close relationship between the policy and strategy aims of the agency and the executive elements at ISIC will clearly be essential. Stuart previously spent 16 years with the UK Ministry of Defence, in various space-related posts, before joining SSTL in January 2004. During his time with the MOD, Stuart initiated the TopSat high resolution small satellite. This satellite was built by SSTL and established a new world record for “resolution per mass of satellite” and has now been operating on-orbit for more than twice its design lifetime.
A fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society for more than 15 years, Stuart also has an MSc in Astrophysics, a PhD in constellation design. He takes an active interest in all things space from smallsats to planetary classification and continues to spread his enthusiasm for space through outreach programs such as the Engineering Education Scheme that he will soon be judging and overseeing the BNSC-sponsored Space Experiment competition that culminated in the POISE experiment that was launched onboard UK-DMC2 in July last year.
Aside from his duty to national security, Stuart remains an important part of SSTL and has time allocated for specific SSTL activities. Unfortunately for the Guildford team, where Stuart goes his trusty inflatable dalek follows – and it will be sadly missed!
